Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s South Side, Calumet Fisheries stands as a beloved seafood institution that has earned passionate fans from across the city and beyond. This humble seafood restaurant, located at 3259 E 95th St, offers an authentic taste of smoked and fried fish in a no-frills, cash-only setting that celebrates flavor above all.
What truly sets Calumet Fisheries apart is its masterful smoked fish – a specialty that invites the palate on an unforgettable journey. The pepper and garlic salmon is a standout, boasting a perfectly moist texture infused with balanced smoky richness and just the right hint of spice. The plain lake trout and smoked salmon have become signature favorites, loved for their deep, luscious flavor and tender bite that lingers delightfully. The smoky aroma alone is enough to awaken an eager hunger.
For those who crave something fried, Calumet Fisheries delivers generous portions of crispy, golden delights like fried oysters, fried catfish nuggets, and fried smelts that are satisfyingly crunchy on the outside while perfectly juicy inside. The fish and chips and fried frog legs further showcase their skilled frying technique, offering robust flavor and texture contrasts. Side dishes such as French fries, onion rings, and creamy potato salad round out the meal with comforting, familiar touches.
Dining at Calumet Fisheries is an experience defined by its casual and welcoming vibe. There’s no indoor seating—guests enjoy their meals outdoors at picnic tables tucked under the nearby railroad bridge, soaking in a distinctly Chicago atmosphere. While some may find the heat in summer less than ideal, patrons insist the quality of food more than compensates. The quick and knowledgeable service behind the counter keeps the line moving and is always ready to answer curious questions about the extensive smoked fish offerings or how best to enjoy them.
Regulars and first-timers alike speak to the restaurant’s special place in Chicago’s food scene. Allen Gara captures it perfectly: “Every Chicagoan who loves fish has to try this place at least once.” Likewise, Caressa Franklin’s enthusiasm for the smoked salmon and fried oysters sums up the deep satisfaction many feel after their visit. And for those looking for a creative twist, Junko Minami highlights how the smoked salmon pairs beautifully with green tea over rice, blending cultural flavors in a thoughtful and delightful way.
For seafood lovers craving genuine, expertly prepared smoked and fried fish, Calumet Fisheries is more than just a meal—it’s a cherished culinary destination. Whether you’re grabbing a pound of catfish or savoring crispy fried shrimp, each bite tells a story of tradition, smoky depth, and pure flavor joy in the heart of Chicago.
Every Chicagoan who loves fish has to try this place at least once. Its tricky to get to at first, but there's ample street parking once you do. I usually get some fried fish or shrimp and eat outside at the picnic tables. The big draw is the smoked fish though. The pepper and garlic salmon is amazing, and the plain lake trout is great too. The fish is always moist and smoky, not dry.
The smoked salmon was fantastic, some of the best I’ve had. The fried oysters were also delicious. I can’t believe I had never been to this amazing Chicago staple. Will definitely be visiting more often.
We ate a lot of good food during our weekend trip to Chicago, but I don’t think anything could beat the seafood we got at Calumet Fisheries. The fried fish and smoked shrimp were both absolutely incredible, and I felt like the portions, including a generous serving of fries, were well worth the price. There isn’t any inside seating and it was really hot outside, but it was absolutely worth sweating at the picnic tables outside to enjoy this fresh and delicious meal!
Y'all already know how good the smoked salmon is from the many reviews on this site. My first bite was on a slice of French pave' bread and it was as everyone had raved about. But did you know it also tastes amazing, Japanese style, as a chazuke topping? I placed a good chunk atop steamed rice with green tea. Delicious across multiple cultural flavor profiles--now that's talent.
Smoked fish. Fried fish. Potato salad. French fries. All of it served up from a cash only counter. Service is quick, they answer any questions, and you eat outside on picnic tables next to the bridge. ATM inside, no indoor seating, no bathroom, gets busy but line moves quickly. We've had: - smoked salmon - smoked garlic and pepper trout - fried catfish bites - fried smelt - fried shrimp Tarter sauce and coleslaw are both very good. Smoked fish is served cold and pulls apart easily. Might want to bring your own wet wipes. Notes: - Parking: park anywhere on the street. Plenty of space. - front door: you aren't locked out. Push the door hard and it'll open.
I love Calumet Fisheries. I've been a fan for 10 years and counting! I'm typically not a seafood person, but their catfish dinner, fried fresh right in front of you to an incredibly appetizing crisp, yet perfectly flaky and tender on the inside, makes me so happy every time I get to eat it. Sadly I don't live in Chicago anymore, so it's hen I do, I savor every bit of crispy, fishy goodness. So glad they managed to reopen after the fire! Just keep in mind that it's cash only, so you should bring your own cash rather than get nickel-and-dimed by the ATM. It's a small hole in the wall kinda place, so seating is outside, or in your car if you drive. However you get there, it's worth the trip every time!
The fish is always good here and shrimp. I always order a shrimp dinner dinner and sometimes smoked salmon. Today I am writing this interview to let everyone know that you only have a month to receive the correct food if your order was not correct. i'm in Indiana. And I come to the Fishery every 4 to 5 weeks for my dad. One of my orders was incorrect and I was told by an employee that they would write my name in a book and I will receive the corrected item whenever I came in So I'm here today to get my dads shrimp. But I'm told they only keep your name on the books for a month. I explained that I was told whenever I came in I would get my order. But they said the person that told me that no longer works there. Consequently, I had to pay for my dad's order. So this review is not on the food because the food is always great. This is on the practices and procedures. That the store did not stand behind what I was told.
